There are quarterly in‑service workshops on a variety of
different topics, scheduled each year to provide tutors with lesson ideas.

English Conversation Groups
As a supplement to regular tutoring, Literacy DuPage offers English
Conversation Groups for students of all levels. Adult learners may
participate in these conversation practice sessions even if they
are not formally registered as students in the Literacy DuPage program.

LITSTART: Strategies for Adult Literacy and ESL
Tutors, by Patricia Frey and Evey Renner, is the guide used by Literacy
Volunteers of DuPage for tutoring adult learners.

The focus is on using everyday materials that students encounter in their
lives like the telephone book, forms, newspapers, memos, menus, clothing
labels, labels on medication bottles, signs, and the radio. Tutors will acquire
the techniques needed to instruct learners through the training process, lesson

above online, library collections, and in‑service workshops.
